Like everyone else in America, we watched this devastating hurricane destroy so much in the gulf coast. My dad had taken my whole family to New Orleans once for a National Speakers Association meeting and I couldn't believe what I saw happen to places I actually visited. I asked him if he'd volunteer, (he wasn't scheduled to speak for 10 days), and he said I'm not licensed in those states and there's always tons of red tape. I work part-time at our local radio station, WPUB/WCAM. Early on Sunday morning, September 4th, 2005, I was recording weekend news and weather and I heard the governors of Louisiana and Mississippi say if a doctor was licensed in any state, they could come down to help. I was leaving the radio station to meet my family in church so when I got to church I whispered to dad what I heard and asked him if he'd go now that some red tape was gone.

When we got back home, he checked the information, made three phone calls to see where they might need a surgeon, and within two hours, he told me he was going to go and I could come with him. Wow, that was fast! But after being a surgeon for so long, once he makes a decision, he makes things happen. I'm a senior in high school so the only catch was I had to get permission from my principal and had to take my books and do school work, including chemistry! After packing camping supplies, extra gas cans, and some food, we drove down to Mississippi on Labor Day. When we got there, it was crazy. We ended up working with a great team from Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, Florida who were setting up a portable medical clinic in Hancock County , Mississippi . Bay St. Louis was later called ground zero where Katrina came ashore. I believe it after seeing what happened. The team didn't have a doctor, so dad had a job and my job was to organize donated medicine samples from doctors offices to give to patients who had no medicine and no pharmacy for miles and miles away. Dad says now I know more about blood pressure medicines than he does as a surgeon.

I'll never forget our trip. The people we helped were so grateful. It was a humbling experience. People who had lost everything felt blessed if they still had their family in one piece. We only could stay a week but the memories will last a lifetime. When patients came in to be seen, most commonly they were out of medications. Many people lost everything in their homes, and their entire houses, and had no medicines. Some patients were on so many medications, they couldn't keep track of all the names and dosages. This made it difficult to get the right medicines to these patients. Because the hospital had been under 23 feet of storm surge, along with their doctors offices, every medical record in the area was also destroyed. Phone service was non-existent. Even cell phones didn't work because cell phone towers were wiped out from the wind. No one could even call or email to get information from other medical offices or hospitals they had once been in not only with phone service out, but no electricity. And with no gas available, (people were actually hijacking cars to siphon gas tanks), it wasn't like you could drive far to get medical information elsewhere.

Some of the patients needed medicines right away. One lady I remember had swelling of her feet, (my dad said it was from early heart failure), so bad she had to cut open her shoes so her feet would fit in them. My dad recognized the problem that these

It took a lot of time to get these people the right medications and not only did it cause delays in their own treatment, it slowed our ability to see other patients as well. When we started to run low on tetanus shots, we had to start rationing them to county workers and for patients that had wounds that really needed the shot.

And nobody, not patients, or us, liked that one bit.
